Dr. Zeidler and Dr. Berkowitz recently attended the ASAPS meeting in sunny San Diego, and as always, both doctors enjoyed catching up with colleagues, checking out the newest technologies, and having some top-secret meetings about yet-to-be-revealed industry developments.
Dr. Zeidler Featured on Facebook Live for miraDry
Aesthetx is one of the only practices to offer miraDry in Silicon Valley, and it’s wildly popular with patients. Aesthetx patients love permanently getting rid of underarm sweat, eliminating odor without wearing deodorant, and most importantly, the boost in body confidence. While at ASAPS, Dr. Zeidler demonstrated how quick and easy the miraDry procedure is on Facebook Live.
Fat Transfer, Renuva, and More
Dr. Zeidler also met with several companies with new technologies in development, including new ways to do fat transfer to the face and hands, without the need for the operating room and general anesthesia, making it easier and more attainable for more patients (and most likely more affordable). There is also a new product called Renuva that Dr. Zeidler will be starting a clinical trial for some time in 2018. It is fat in a syringe that can be used for filling small dents – great for cellulite and dimples created by surgery. The future studies will be looking at this product as a permanent alternative to HA fillers in the face.
Dr. Zeidler met with the CEOs of both Sientra and Allergan breast implant companies to see where the companies are going and how they plan to refine their products over the next several years. Dr. Zeidler is looking forward to the collaborations both companies are planning with Aesthetx, including supporting Dr. Z’s annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness day (BRA Day).
Dr. Zeidler loved how down to earth Allergan CEO Brent Saunders was. He even followed us on Instagram and regularly “likes” our posts. Dr. Zeidler and Dr. Berkowitz are both excited about the incredible breadth of technologies Allergan is consolidating into programs that will give patients rewards – from BOTOX, to fillers, to CoolSculpting, to breast implants. Sientra has some exciting new developments in their US manufacturing plant. Dr. Zeidler is their current Medical Director for their Clinical Trials and is currently working on writing their clinical outcomes paper on their 10 year breast implant study data. She looks forward to joining their Medical Advisory Board, and enjoys collaborating with their CEO Jef Nugent on the company’s plans for expansion.
Dr. Zeidler REALLY was excited about the first clinical trial meeting for the new breast implant company Motiva from Costa Rica. These implants have some exciting new features, including a special blue membrane to detect rupture, an implanted chip to provide more information about the implant size and history, and special shells and micro textures and super silicones, which may have some unique benefits to patients. The “ergonomic” breast implant is one that Dr. Zeidler has her eyes set on as it could potentially offer all the benefits of an anatomically-shaped implant, without the risks. The trial will provide more data on these special features.
The Motiva meeting was hosted at the San Diego Zoo, where Dr. Z dined amongst exotic animals from around the world.
The REAL Highlight of ASAPS
Although dinner at the zoo was amazing, Dr. Zeidler had to admit that her favorite part of her visit to San Diego was getting a ride in a bike taxi after walking around in stilettos all day!
Dr. Berkowitz Speaks on Innovations in Rhinoplasty
Dr. B’s time at ASAPS was just as busy! He was a featured speaker in a panel regarding innovations in rhinoplasty where he showed his 5-minute video of utilizing the ultra-high frequency piezo electric power tools. This generated quite a bit of discussion but with much greater acceptance of the validity compared to his prior presentations on the subject.
Dr. Berkowitz was also the co- chairman of the Rhinoplasty Symposium along with the president of the Rhinoplasty Society, Dr Geoffrey Keyes. The symposium was designed to educate plastic surgeons who are not members of the Rhinoplasty Society on what changes are being made. Surgeons from across the world were speakers in the program. The emphasis was on the more predictable and versatile approach to a more structured rhinoplasty result utilizing cartilage grafts from the nose, ear and rib donor sites.
Again power tools were featured by Dr Berkowitz as an innovation to improve outcomes.
After the Symposium Dr Berkowitz was a faculty member in a cadaver course on rhinoplasty where participants learned basic and advanced techniques in an open forum with their colleagues. Dr Berkowitz provided piezo machines from Comeg and Synthes for the participants to try out. This is the beginning of what will be a revolution if not just an evolution in our field.
Dr. Berkowitz and Dr. Zeidler had a great time in San Diego, but they’re happy to be back at Aesthetx doing what they do best – making you, you…only better.
