Patient having a consultation

Facial beauty is something that has been revered throughout the ages and across cultures. It has been represented in art, sought by both men and women, and has even been studied by scientists. While everyone has their own thoughts about what makes someone beautiful, plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures allow people to make these ideas a reality.

Aesthetx’s Dr. Amelia K. Hausauer sat down with Haute Beauty to reflect on what makes a face beautiful, and to explain how cosmetic procedures are revolutionizing the ways in which people can attain their ideal look.

Facial Beauty: It’s All About Proportion

Throughout history, mathematics has played an important role in what is considered “beautiful.” As Dr. Hausauer notes in the article, medieval artists often divided the face into sevenths to further understand the relationship between balance, proportion, and beauty. These days, it’s common for artists to separate the face into vertical fifths to understand this same concept.

Dr. Hausauer stated, “The golden ratio or divine proportion—1.618:1 where 1.618 is called Phi after the Greek sculptor Phidias—is the most common mathematical relationship influencing our understanding of facial aesthetics…Maintaining and appreciating this ratio allows for beautiful yet natural results. It taps into what we innately recognize as harmonious in shape.”

While this is helpful for understanding facial beauty, Dr. Hausauer points out that the face occurs in three dimensions. Similarly, aging occurs at all levels, including the skin and deeper tissues. This idea has changed the way dermatologists and other aesthetic professionals approach their practice. Rather than just pulling skin tight or filling in lines, Dr. Hausauer stated, “We now think of curves and vectors where refilling one area of the face influences those below it. Enhancing features takes these principles one step further.”

How Patients are Attaining Their Ideal Look

Injectables have revolutionized the field of aesthetics. These days, patients can rejuvenate their face and augment their features without having to undergo surgery. Dr. Hausauer mentioned that dermal fillers and neuromodulator injectables (like BOTOX and Dysport) allow patients to reduce wrinkles, restore volume, rebuild jawline contours, and even reshape minor irregularities of the nose. Surgery, of course, is still an effective way of treating facial aging and for augmenting the features. But the ease and convenience of injectables makes patients’ cosmetic goals even easier to achieve.

Ultimately, Dr. Hausauer explained that it’s all about highlighting the patient’s natural beauty and making customized refinements: “As a fellowship-trained aesthetic dermatologist, it is my job to maximize each face’s potential rather than making that face fit a mold.”
