Otoplasty at a Glance

Otoplasty is a type of plastic surgery procedure that reshapes, repositions, and recontours the ears so they will be proportional and balanced.

The ideal position of the ears varies from person to person, which is why we highly recommend individuals schedule a one-on-one Otoplasty consultation with our plastic surgeon, Dr. Zeidler. She will be able to determine the ideal shape and position for the individual’s facial features.

During the consultation, patients will also have the opportunity to express their concerns and their goals for their Otoplasty.

During the Otoplasty consultation, Dr. Zeidler will evaluate the external anatomy of each ear, take measurements, and then take photographs of the ears for further review. She will then formulate an operative plan based on each patient’s specific needs.

Ideal Candidates for Otoplasty

Otoplasty is not only designed for cosmetic purposes but also for reconstruction of the ears due to injury or congenital deformity. Generally, the ideal candidates for Otoplasty are those who possess the following characteristics:

  • Overly large or prominent ears
  • One ear is not symmetric with the other,
  • Ears are disproportionately sized compared to the rest of the facial structures
  • Sense of hearing is affected due to a misshapen ear
  • Embarrassment and emotional duress due to ears
  • Have a physical injury that affects the function and structure of the ear

Patients as young as five years old to adults can benefit from an Otoplasty. Young patients should have fully developed ears before they can receive the treatment.

Otoplasty Procedure

The actual surgery is performed at the Aesthetx’s state-of-the-art facility on an outpatient basis. Depending on the complexity, otoplasty patients may be put under local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia. Children are put under general anesthesia in most cases.

After performing the pre-surgery protocols, the surgeon will make a discreet incision behind the ear to expose the cartilage. Once exposed, the doctor will reshape or remodel the cartilage, depending on the patient’s unique case. The incisions are closed with sutures. The entire operation may take two to three hours to complete.

Otoplasty Result and Recovery

Following the otoplasty procedure, the patient may experience mild pain, discomfort, nausea, numbness, swelling, and bruising. We will prescribe pain medications for use once the effects of anesthesia subside. We will also include post-operative and recovery instructions to help the patient heal properly.

To assist in healing, the surgeon will wrap the patient’s head with cotton bandages, which can be removed after one week.

The patient will then wear a special headband designed for Otoplasty to hold the ears in their proper position. The full recovery period for otoplasty is six weeks. However, children and adults may return to school or work one week after the procedure.

Once the swelling and bruising subside, patients will begin to see the ears taking shape; and upon full recovery, patients will enjoy beautiful, natural-looking new ears permanently.
