Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure that enhances the size and shape of the breasts using customized implants to achieve a fuller, more balanced appearance.
The Evolution of Breast Augmentation
The journey of breast augmentation has been shaped by a rich history of innovation and refinement. Women have long sought ways to enhance their breasts, even before the advent of safe surgical techniques. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, early attempts at breast augmentation involved the use of various substances, from paraffin and ivory balls to beeswax and mineral oil, with often disastrous results. These experimental methods were fraught with complications, leading to deformities and health issues for many women.
The first significant breakthrough came in 1961 when plastic surgeons Dr. Thomas Cronin and Dr. Frank Gerow in Houston developed the first silicone breast implant. This innovation marked the beginning of modern breast augmentation, with the first procedure performed in 1962 on patient Timmie Jean Lindsay. A few years later, in 1964, the development of saline-filled implants by the French company Laboratories Arion provided women with an alternative to silicone, particularly in the United States, where concerns about silicone implants led to an FDA moratorium in 1992.
This moratorium left saline implants as the primary option for breast augmentation in the U.S. for many years. However, after extensive research and clinical trials, the FDA lifted the ban on silicone implants in 2006, recognizing their safety and effectiveness. The reintroduction of silicone implants led to further advancements, including the development of highly cohesive silicone gel implants, often referred to as "gummy bear" implants, and anatomically shaped implants that offer a more natural appearance.
Today, breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure worldwide, thanks to continuous innovation and the refinement of techniques. Our Marin County practice is proud to be at the forefront of this field, offering state-of-the-art breast augmentation options to help women achieve their desired look with confidence.
